A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
