From Acclaim to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Epstein Document Disclosure is Divided.
Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
However, some rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was relatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given physical folders of materials that contained no new data.
